58 New audio books for the Marlborough School library
"The art of listening is a valuable skill and students have benefited by checking out these new audio books we have purchased. Audio books allow readers to explore stories they may not have otherwise read, improve listening skills, expand vocabulary and phonemic awareness, and help with fluency and pace.
I have checked out audio books to many reluctant readers to hook them on a story. These audio books have also been used by our special education department for students who struggle with certain required reading materials or reading in general. The playaways (audio books with headphones all as one unit) are particularly appealing to students and have the added benefit of being able to adjust the speed of the reading.
The funds from Marlborough School District Endowment Fund have brought new titles into the library in audio form that benefits all students! They have been very popular.
Thank you!!!" - Cheri Nutting, Library Media Specialist Marlborough School
The Game of Village for grades 5-7
The Game of Village is an experiential wonder! With a group of two dozen students and a cart full of random materials, a community emerges. Students create a town in miniature, loosely following the American Homestead Act of 1862. Through this program students learn, use and reinforce knowledge of scale, mathematics, civics and ingenuity. Village provides young people an opportunity to engage in the "adult world" on a small scale.
Marlborough School/Keene State College Partnership, 3- year residency model
How this benefits both programs:
1. Marlborough School increases the number of individuals who are skilled to work with students K-6.
2. Marlborough is ensured to have student teachers who have a strong understanding of the ins and outs of Marlborough School and its children.
3. We have more support with our Rtl and PLP initiatives.
4. KSC - "close the gap between theory and practice... place teacher candidates in more robust clinical experiences, and wrap coursework around clinical practice." -- June 23, 2009, by NCATE President, James Cibulka
Guitars for the beginner's guitar class for the music program
Four guitars are being purchased to support the beginner's guitar course now offered at Marlborough School. Having more instruments allows the music department to offer this course to more students. The program is being offered as musical enrichment; above and beyond the music, band, jazz band, and chorus classes.
Snowshoes for first and second grade enrichment
Snow shoes with poles are being used by students in the first and second grades to encourage outdoor play and exploration in the winter months. In addition to encouraging exercise, providing students with snowshoes exposes young kids to a very fun past time in New Hampshire thereby helping to foster healthy life long habits.
A full human skeleton model for the science program
"The leg bones connected to the ..?" Middle school students now have a hands-on tool for learning about the human body and the complexity of the skeletal system. The model skeleton provides students with a tangible experience relating to this study.
