Laurence R. Upton (Chairperson) In 1948-1949, my Mom and Dad built a house in Marlborough on the hill above the school. That’s where I spent my childhood and youth. My brother and I went to school in Marlborough, as did our Marshall, Silk, and Upton cousins. Several of us over the years, from 1962 to 1968, had the honor of being class valedictorian. I was active in Scouts, 4-H, and the Grange. In school, I participated in soccer, school band, and theater productions.
Math, English, science, history, government, Latin and French -- my training at Marlborough school prepared me well. I attended UNH where I majored in Psychology (BA summa cum laude, 1969). From there I went to Purdue University (MS, developmental and educational psychology) and the University of Minnesota (PhD, cognitive psychology).
I have had the privilege of teaching at several excellent colleges and universities, including the University of New Hampshire, University of Liverpool (England), Lehigh University, and North Carolina State University.
After 50 years of living hither and thither, I decided it was time to “come home.” In September 2016, I purchased a property on Jaffrey Road. Some of you may know it as the “Old Tenney Tavern.” I am still in the process of moving in. Hope to be settled by the time of the Marlborough Alumni Association meeting this June. Cheers to one and all. Stop by the Tavern some day and say hello.
